Hamilton, unpenalized despite his overtaking with a red flag

Date:

British pilot Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) He was not penalized for overtaking Kevin Magnussen with a red flag on the track during the third free practice session of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Stewards listened to the seven-time champion and the team representative and analyzed data from the positioning system, telemetry, team radio and car video.

They verified, according to the FIA, that Hamilton passed Kevin Magnussen (Haas) after the red flag.

However, the Stevenage driver said he was on a quick lap, saw the red light, immediately eased off the accelerator and braked, while checking his mirrors for cars nearby, noting that, “in doing of this, there are pasts” in Magnussen .

Stewards noted precedent in relation to the 2021 Dutch Grand Prix (Max Verstappen), where no action was taken against the driver in similar but dissimilar circumstances.

They also found that the telemetry data showed that “immediately after the red light, the driver lifted the accelerator to one hundred percent” and that “immediately after the red light, he braked firmly.”

The speed of Hamilton’s car at this point was 288 kilometers per hour and Magnussen’s was 126.

“Our conclusion is that the driver of car 44 (Hamilton) took all reasonable steps to comply with the rules because he immediately slowed down safely in the first instance at the first indication of the red light,” the commissioners said.

Although it was “technically still a violation”, they understood that the British “couldn’t avoid overtaking” and, as such, determined that no penalty would be applied. EFE
