At the end of the tie between Welsh Y USA (1-1), neko williams he shouted, kneeling, pointing to the sky. He dedicated the match, Wales’ first at a World Cup since 1958, to his grandfather, Kelvin Jones, who died hours before his grandson’s World Cup debut.
“Yesterday I received some of the hardest news I’ve ever had to deal with. My mother told me my grandfather had passed away. Going from crying all day to starting a World Cup match was very difficult , but I achieved it thanks to the support of my family and my teammates”, said Williams after the 1-1 win against the Americans.
With his number three on his chest and his arms raised towards the sky, Williams shed tears on the pitch of the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium in tribute to his grandfather, one of the main characters for him to dedicate himself to in football.
“I think I am a footballer thanks to my grandfather. He is a great player, scouts from different teams come to see him and he is one of the best players in my town, but the injuries slowed him down. I continued to do what I could for him”, added the Nottingham Forest footballer.
“He traveled all over the world to watch me play football, since I started at Liverpool at the age of six. He never told me that I did well, because he wanted me to improve every day, and that’s why I am here now. I would love for him to dedicate this fight to him, because I know he is watching me from there with pride”.
