In 2023, the changing rooms, lighting and stands will be renovated on the athletics track

Date:

The City Council finalizes the tender for the project, worth more than two million euros, to end the historic shortcomings of the facility

Cartagena’s busiest sports facility, the athletics track, is getting a modernization of the grandstands, lighting and changing rooms for the first time in more than thirty years. The City Council is preparing the tender for the project, worth more than two million euros, recently presented to the thousands of children who wear tartan every day, especially UCAM Cartagena and ElCano. The municipal forecast is to start works in the first quarter of 2023, which will mark the beginning of the end of historic shortcomings that outrage athletes, spectators, fathers and mothers.

The most notable achievements relate to a space of 900 square meters. There, the city council is designing a main building with changing rooms (for men, women and children), toilets, cellars and a few rooms: one to store sports equipment and another so that users, fathers, mothers and coaches can meet in time to discuss the business from day to day.

A pinch of that investment will include using renewable energy, particularly geothermal energy, to extract heat from the earth and users having hot water in showers. The athletics track has an outdated grandstand for 204 spectators, which remains small when organizing major events (national and regional) and lacked the minimum separation space in the most difficult moments of the pandemic. Those seats were never touched and it led to a crowd, without going any further in the final Ciudad de Cartagena trophy. Visibility is minimal and this time there are places for people with reduced mobility. The new grandstands will also be covered. All this action costs about 1.9 million euros.

Currently, the changing rooms suffer over the years, there is moisture on the walls and on the foundation. An air chamber will facilitate the ventilation of this space. In addition to this intervention, the city council plans to allocate 670,000 euros for the renovation of all lighting. The current one is sparse, flawed and slimmed down in the curves of the running track. His strength is well below normal and presents a vision problem for the shot put and javelin throw.

A light study confirmed the shortcomings. They all want to be corrected with four thirty meter high LED towers, with sufficient capacity to reach all parts of the municipal facility.

The track records maximum peaks of up to 900 people per day, including athletes, local clubs, fans and opponents. The facility has been managed since last year by UCAM Cartagena, a club that competes in the top athletics category (Division of Honor) and surpasses more than 25% of federation records in the Murcia region. ElCano’s more than 400 kids are also at the center of attention. The project was presented to all of them, in the presence of Mayor Noelia Arroyo.

The main building contemplates the relocation of the outside trees and the creation of a landscape facade. The work costs 1.9 million euros and the implementation period is 18 months. The renovation of the lighting will take sixty days. The Autonomous Community contributes some 250,000 euros. The clubs will also demand that the “small” gym be improved.
