Switzerland’s old guard met Cameroon’s enthusiasm

Date:

Switzerland and Cameroon enter the scene in this World Cup in Qatar 2022. The confrontation between both teams represents an important opportunity to make a difference from a good start, because they live in a group of the most difficult which is the clear favorite Brazil. The Helvetians and Africans must fight –a priori– for second place with a firm Serbian of Dusan Vlahovic, so a win against direct rivals would mean a huge boost to said cause.

The old guard of switzerland is measured in the enthusiasm of Cameroon. The indomitable lions have changed a lot since 2014, when they played their last World Cup. LAfricans no longer have stars like Samuel Eto’oalthough they have a more compensated block where it stands out Eric Choupo-Moting, Bayern striker going through a moment of great form. The Franco-Cameroonian attacker has 11 goals in 16 appearances this season, most of them scored in a spectacular month of October.

Cameroon has never faced Switzerland, yet starts a new era with Murat Yakin on the bench. The Swiss took the baton from Vladimir Petkovic, who led the team in the last two stages and in both on the verge of reaching the quarterfinals. They came close to Russia, knocked out by Sweden in a balanced encounter. Yakin still maintains that Swiss base, with veterans like this Ricardo Rodriguez, Granite Xhaka either Xerdan Shaqiri and other youngsters like Denis Zakaria, from Chelsea or Breel Embolo from Monaco, who put the Swiss team in Qatar to a glorious qualifying stage where they were able to get right out of Italy, the current European champion.

Yakin did not hesitate to praise the players who make up the golden generation of Swiss football. “We are one of the best Swiss teams to ever exist. We have many high-performance players abroad. I am convinced that we will have a good World Cup”, he explained. “We will take the tournament game by game. I wouldn’t say that our group is the hardest group. We prepared hard for the first match and we are looking forward to this match”, added Yakin who is eager to break the mole. “We are not here to just play. We want to win every game and go as far as possible”.

Meanwhile, in Cameroon, Song of Rigobert He wants to “send” his “experience” to his students in what will be his sixth World Cup, the second as a coach. “That experience is useful when I talk to the young generation, they are professionals, they know what they have to do, I just try to support them, help them do their best,” he said. We are calm, we are ready, we are focused,” added Song.
