The Iranian Voria Ghafouri ‘reappears’!

An Iranian court granted bail to the soccer player on Tuesday voria ghafouriwas arrested last week for his support of the protests that have rocked Iran since mid-September.

The former defender of Iran’s national team was released “after the latest judicial investigations” and after the payment of “appropriate bail,” the Mizan news agency reported. Ghafouri was arrested on Friday on charges of “propaganda against the regime” and “insulting and defaming the national football team.”

The current player, who is of Kurdish origin, has publicly supported the protests sparked by the death in September of Mahsa Amini, a native of Iranian Kurdistan.

The mobilizations began over the death of a 22-year-old Kurdish girl, but they have grown and now protesters are calling for the end of the Islamic Republic founded by Ayatollah Ruholá Khomeini in 1979.

Ghafouri’s release was announced hours before the clash between Iran and the United States, where the move to the round of 16 of the World Cup was played in Qatar.

His arrest took place a day before the match between the Iranian team and Wales (2-0) in Doha, where the Iranian players sang the national anthem.

In the previous match, the players of the Iranian team did not sing the anthem of their country before facing England (2-6), as a gesture of support for the protests. Soccer players were one of the groups that most expressed their support for the protesters.

In addition to Ghafouri, former player Ali Daei announced that he declined an invitation to go to Qatar as a show of solidarity with the families who lost loved ones.

More than 300 people have died in the police crackdown and at least 2,000 have been accused of various crimes for their participation in it, of which six have been sentenced to death so far.
