The Europeans are favourites, but the Oceanians hold on to the surprises happening in Qatar
An Australia-Denmark doesn’t seem like a fan-making game a priori, but a World Cup and standings on the line put it on edge to give it a little more interest. With France as likely group champion – in addition to their lead they are measured against the weak Tunisia – the Australians and the Danes will play for second place this Wednesday and thus their presence in the eighth finals.
Most likely, the Danes, unavoidable favourites, will repeat the team that fell with dignity to the Gauls, asking whether Kasper Hjulmand will give Braithwaite a chance as a starter. Who will not be there is Delaney, who was injured on the opening day and at best will have to wait until the round of 16, as long as the Danes qualify.
Nor are many changes expected in an Australia that has done what it had to do, win Tunisia, to reach the final day with options to move into the round of 16 for the first time in its history. Atkinson, injured against France, could be on the last day of the group stage.
Much of the oceanic options will depend on Ajdin Hrustic’s performance. It’s the team’s engine, capable of anything else to surprise a well-equipped defense centered around Kasper Schmeichel, but Australia still look like an immature team to beat hard-working Denmark accustomed to the rhythm of European football .
In short, Denmark is heading towards the eighth finals, but if this World Cup has shown anything again, it is that every surprise is possible in football. That’s what Australia is clinging to to make history.
