The Cycling Tour of the Region of Murcia Costa Cálida-Gran Premio Primafrio, which will celebrate its 43rd edition in 2023 and will be held on Saturday 11 February, will start in San Javier and will be televised for another year via Eurosport and the regional channel 7TV.

The international sporting event that has been organized in the region for the longest period of time will start from the Mar Menor, as happened in 2020 and 2021, under the agreement signed between the San Javier City Council and the Murcian Cycling Race Organizing Club responsible for the tests.

San Javier hosted the Vuelta a Murcia for the first time in 1989 as a start or finish point and the second part of the first stage started from that city, a team time trial that the PDM won and repeated a day later, finishing the second stage with victory for Antonio Esparza.

In 2002, the goal of the second leg took place in the town of Mar Menor, which was won by Italian Fabio Sacchi. In 2008, the last stage of that edition began, in which Koldo Fernández triumphed and confirmed Alejandro Valverde’s third overall victory in the Tour of Murcia.

His last stage finish was in 2019, when Pello Bilbao was the winner in a round dominated by the Astana team. In 2020 and 2021 it was a crossroads for two editions that started in Los Alcázares. The participation in the test, which will start from the Almansa Park, of the Murcian cyclists Luis León Sánchez, Antonio Soto, José María García and José Luis Faura has been confirmed.

“For us it was an honor to help the Vuelta when it needed it most and this year we are in a different context, but equally delighted,” said San Javier Mayor José Miguel Luengo yesterday, who was a appealed to “all residents of San Javier so that they can go out that day for a nice bike ride.
