The Catalan tennis player leaves his office “by mutual agreement” at the RFET, after five years as a coach
Sergi Bruguera stepped down as captain of the Spanish Davis Cup team on Monday. After five years in office, the former Catalan has reached an agreement with the Spanish Tennis Federation (RFET) to step down as Davis Cup captain. Player favorite David Ferrer is the firm favorite to replace Bruguera at the helm of a team that will not play this competition again until September 2023.
Bruguera, current coach of Alexander Zverev, won the sixth Salad Bowl with Spain in November in Madrid and his last appearance with the national team was in the quarter-finals last month, a tie they lost to Croatia in Malaga. Surprisingly, it will be Ferrer, a friend of Rafa Nadal and Juan Carlos Ferrero, the coach of Carlos Alcaraz, who will take over.
According to the FET, Bruguera’s dismissal was decided “by mutual agreement”. “The Board of Directors of RFET would like to thank Sergi Bruguera for his work as the leader of the Spanish team since 2017. The Roland Garros double champion and Atlanta silver medalist leaves with the gratitude of the fans and all players,” the federation acknowledged. “RFET sports management has already entered into talks with several candidates to fill the position of captain of the national Mapfre Davis Cup team,” the organization said.
