MotoGP will launch a system to avoid collisions

Date:

One of the most dangerous situations in MotoGP is when a crash occurs and the rider stays in the middle of the track, because he is in great danger of being run over by one of the bikes behind him. Even if the injured person fell on the gravel, any motorcycle coming from behind that could crash at the same point could hit the fallen rider. That’s why the World Cup, in an attempt to continue increasing the safety of participants in a sport that never stops being risky, has decided to implement a system in 2023 on motorcycles of all categories (MotoGP, Moto2 and Moto3) to avoid or reduce the possibility of being run over. This was stated by MotoGP’s Technical Director, Corrado Cecchinelli, in remarks on the portal ‘Crash.net’.

It is an automatic warning device that aims to detect, as soon as possible, the fall of a rider to send a “rider down” signal from the accident motorcycle that can alert competitors coming from behind.

As Cecchinelli explained, accident detection is through a ‘virtual crash switch’, using data to calculate when a motorcycle falls. “The basic principle is that, in every machine of all types, a system is capable of detecting a fall. By system, I mean hardware and software, which then sends a signal to the Race Direction”, revealed he.

“The hardware is, for now, a ‘virtual drop switch’ that we built from the IMU signals. We don’t have a (physical) droop switch, but we use this data to build a virtual droop switch,” he added.

Alert as soon as possible

Above all, Corrado Cecchinelli emphasized that this system aims to warn of a fall even before the bike hits the ground, to be as fast as possible. And it is that the sooner the pilots behind are alerted, the more likely the system will be effective.

“We take into account the position of the bike and the speed of its fall. Because waiting for the bike to be on the ground would be too long. So we need to implement something that is not a prediction, but a rate of change that is derived. Therefore, if it leans too fast compared to the speed at which it leans under normal conditions, a shock signal is activated,” he added about the exact details of said new security system, assuring that the intention will implement it now. from next season, in 2023.
