Croatian players were devastated after Argentina were clearly defeated in the semifinals of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and could not repeat the runner-up position achieved four years ago in Russia.
Lovro Majer, a Rennes midfielder, entered the final minutes of the game and, in remarks on Croatian national television, acknowledged that “I would not say that there was fatigue” to justify the defeat after Brazil was eliminated from round of 16 during the penalties just four days earlier.
“The penalty killed us, then the second goal came. In matches like this, it’s hard to get back into the game. Argentina is too big a team,” Majer said about the reasons for elimination.
Despite the bitterness of being left in the final. the Croatian media highlighted that “we have one game left, we will do everything possible to finish in third place. We go home satisfied”.
On Saturday the Balkan team will play a consolation match against the loser of tomorrow’s semifinal between France and Morocco.
