In the official first World Cup in history, with 13 participating teams, the albiceleste coached by Francisco Olázar reached the grand final after topping their group and eliminating the United States in the semifinals (6-1). The last game was played on July 30 at the Centenario stadium in Montevideo and the locals won 4-2. Dorado put Charrúas ahead, but Peucelle and Stábile (top scorer of the tournament) turned it around before the break. Continuing, Cea, Iriarte and Castro awarded the title to Uruguay.

ARGENTINA 1978
Argentina 3 Netherlands 1
As the host country and Mario Alberto Kempes as the star, Argentina lifted its first World Cup trophy on June 25 at the Monumental stadium in Buenos Aires. A controversial win over Peru (6-0) in the second period gave them access to the final, where they defeated the Netherlands after extra time (3-1). That team was coached by César Luis Menotti. Kempes put the albiceleste ahead in the first half, but Nanninga equalized eight minutes from time. In extra time, Kempes and Bertoni scored again for Argentina.

MEXICO 1986
Argentina 3 Germany 2
The second World Cup, and last for now, came on June 29 at the Azteca stadium in Mexico City. In an amazing match, the team led by Carlos Salvador Bilardo won 3-2. Brown and Valdano put the Argentines 2-0 up, but Rummenigge and Völler managed to equalize for the Teutons. Five minutes from the end, Burruchaga brought the albiceleste into ecstasy. That World Cup is remembered for the performance of Diego Armando Maradona. His two goals against England in the quarterfinals go down in history for different reasons. He also scored two against Belgium in the semifinals.

ITALY 1990
Germany 1 Argentina 0
In front of Carlos Bilardo and physically touching Maradona, the Argentine team had a lot of problems to pass the first stage. He did it as a third group. From there, the story changed. They eliminated Brazil, Yugoslavia and hosts Italy before losing to Germany on July 8 at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome. The South Americans’ aspirations were somewhat dented by the result of Andreas Brehme’s hotly contested penalty five minutes from the end.

BRAZIL 2014
Germany 1 Argentina 0
There was great disappointment on July 13. The Argentines looked to lift their third trophy at the Maracanã stadium in Rio de Janeiro, no less, but once again Germany crossed their path. A goal by Mario Götze in extra time (minute 113) ended the dream. Led by Alejandro Sabella, as coach, and Leo Messi, as star, the albiceleste reached the final after scoring nine points in their group and eliminated Switzerland, Belgium and the Netherlands in the subsequent rounds, the latter in penalty shootout. Messi scored four ‘targets’ in the group stage.
