The tennis player from Alicante was favored by the players and the main favorite to fill the position that the Catalan left on Monday
David Ferrer becomes the new Spanish captain of the Davis Cup. Three days after Sergi Bruguera officially stepped down as national coach, “by mutual agreement” with the Spanish Tennis Federation (RFET), the former Alicante player accepted the organization’s offer to hold the position for the next three years, until 2025.
Ferrer, a three-time Davis Cup champion as a player, was favored by the tennis players to replace Bruguera, after the Catalan spent five years in charge of the national team, champion in 2019 and was eliminated by Croatia last month – without Rafa Nadal nor Carlos Alcaraz-, in the quarterfinals of the competition.
The tennis player from Jávea directed the final phase of this year’s Davis Cup in Malaga, won by Canada. In addition to being a friend of Nadal and Juan Carlos Ferrero, the coach of Alcaraz, David Ferrer’s manager during his sports career was Albert Molina, who fills exactly that role with the young Murcian tennis player.
Ferrer was outlined from the outset as the main favorite to become Davis captain following Bruguera’s departure. Spain will not play this competition again until September 2023, already with the former Alicante player at the helm after the RFET thanked Bruguera for his work over the past five years. “The Board of Directors of RFET would like to thank Sergi Bruguera for his work as the leader of the Spanish team since 2017. The Roland Garros double champion and Atlanta silver medalist leaves with the gratitude of the fans and all players,” the federation acknowledged.
“The RFET sports management has already entered into talks with several candidates to take the position of captain of the national Mapfre Davis Cup team,” the organization added last Monday.
