Date:

Jose Manuel Francopresident of the Higher Sports Council, was praised this Monday David Ferrer, new Spanish Davis Cup captainwhere he emphasized his “desire to excel, resilience and humility” and encouraged him to “dream big” to achieve success.

The Secretary of State for Sports hosted the presentation of David Ferrer as the new coach of the Spanish Davis Cup.

“Today, David Ferrer accepts the challenge of guiding the Davis Cup team with the respect, love and admiration of the tennis world. I must admit that it is impossible to separate the admiration I feel for Ferrer since his playing days. We still remember the painful battles that seemed lost, he turned them around and almost always won,” said Franco.

“That’s outstanding the desire to improve, the ability to fight and his tireless style from under the track and role model on the field of play. You starred in epic battles and made us emotional and vibrate with your delivery and passion. I also recognized the same values when I saw you as the director of the Conde de Godó trophy. I found him to be a good manager, close to the player and helpful to the public,” he said.

“That humility that always characterized you made you grow if possible. Seeing him made me think how lucky Spanish tennis is to have someone like you. I sincerely hope that this opportunity that comes your way to extend the historic glory of Spain in the Davis Cup will be profitable and fruitful. I encourage you to dream big and work to further advance your country,” he concluded.

Miguel Díaz, president of the Royal Spanish Tennis Federation, wanted to show his “thanks” to the former captain, Sergi Bruguera, who did “a great job, got the title”.

First, it took us eighty years to win the first title and since 2000 we’ve had six, but that’s not normal. We’re used to it. It is very difficult to win the Davis Cup. We have had some great players and Spanish tennis is currently in very good health. The primary schools are at a historic high and we are very happy with how everything is going,” said Díaz.

The top leader of RFET spoke about David Ferrer, in whom he has great confidence in the next three years.

“We are presenting a wonderful person. Being number three in the world with the competition of historical monsters should be appreciated. It would have been number one if none of the players had competed with him,” he said.

“David Ferrer is a fighter. We call him the gladiator of tennis. I met him when he was fifteen years old and he played a final against Marc López at the club I managed. It turned out to be a hugely successful career. We are very happy that he has accepted the position of coach. I hope we get the seventh, eighth and ninth from him. With the respect the players have for him and the professionalism with which he works, we will achieve great success with him,” he said.
