The Trinidad Alfonso Valencia Marathon is covered in only a week 62% of its registrations for the 2023 editionwhere the upper limit for the race was increased from thirty to thirty-three thousand runners.
“There is no better thermometer to appreciate an edition than the entry of registrations for the following year. We opened a week ago and this morning in Marathon there are 20,450 registered. It is 62%, which makes us expect that in February there will be all registrations”, he pointed out in a media meeting Paco Boraorace director.
Of the twenty thousand registered, 36% are from the Valencian Community, 23% from the rest of Spain and 41% foreigners. “In 2022, foreigners will reach 50% and we will be the same percentage because they register more often in the third wave,” he said.
Moreover, Borao also offered the registration numbers for half marathon, which will have twenty-two thousand numbers. “About 14,600 have been registered, which means more than sixty percent. We are proud of the past and anxious because it promises us an exciting 2023 edition”, said Borao, who revealed that almost six thousand athletes have signed up for the two races.
“We can organize the edition without being concerned that the quota is not filled because they will be fulfilled. We will continue to improve the quantity, although the city’s infrastructure limits you to the maximum number of runners, and above all the quality”, he pointed out.
Borao and Juan Botella, general director of the Correcaminos club, co-organizer of the event, also spoke about the fact that in the 2022 edition almost eight thousand registered for the Marathon did not run.
“We have thirty thousand registered and twenty eight thousand confirmed a few days before. Four thousand did not come and another two thousand who withdrew their number did not run and we think most of them are locals”, he ventured.
“The ‘gap’ (hole) is huge between those who are registered and those who collect the number is something we need to understand and that is not exclusive to Valencia. We have seen it in other marathons, the post-covid world is not the same”, pointed out Botella.
“We believe that there is a set of factors. The bibs are sold out quickly and in a year there is a big change. Even though there are many tools, not everyone is very diligent or does not do management. We need to understand the phenomenon. We want see what will happen in the first marathons of 2023, to see if it is an exclusive phenomenon of 2022 and, if not, we will take action ”, he highlighted.
“The number of people who register as a precaution and who until the last moment do not know if they are running is huge. There are people who sign up for three or four because 200 euros is nothing compared to the peace of mind that already brings signing up and then they decide,” explained Borao, who said that they did not consider -consider more risk in the ‘cap’ of numbers, assuming some won’t run so as not to lose quality and take a few steps back.
