In office from 2024 – Stefan Bachmann becomes the new director of the Burgtheater

Date:

The Swiss Stefan Bachmann (56) will be the new director of the Burgtheater. State Secretary for Art and Culture Andrea Mayer (Greens) announced on Wednesday that he will take over the house on the Ring with the 2024/25 season. He was “extremely persuasive in the application process”.

Bachmann succeeds Martin Kušej, who surprisingly withdrew his candidacy for a second term on Tuesday. Bachmann has been director of the Schauspiel Köln since 2013 and before that he led Theater Basel.

The Swiss theatre-maker, born in Zurich on 1 July 1966, has worked several times at the Burgtheater and around 2008 staged Wajdi Mouawad’s “Burnings” at the Akademietheater, for which a Nestroy Prize for best director was also awarded.

Nestroy Prize for Jelinek Production
In 2012 there was also a “Nestroy” for his production of Elfriede Jelinek’s “Winterreise” in the Akademietheater. His contract in Cologne would run until 2026, and he no longer sees the opening of the renovated theater as director.

He also has many years of management experience: from 1998 to 2003 he was a theater director in Basel and since 2013 he has been the director of the Cologne theatre. His tenure was marked by the rebuilding and renovation of the desolate theater, the reopening of which was postponed for years. His current contract in Cologne actually runs until 2026.
