Botox and filling treatments are becoming increasingly popular in Austria. However, the Austrians do not always go to a specialist for the syringe or operation. Experts estimate that the number of illegal beauty interventions is quite high.
It is unclear how many illegal beauty clinics are operated in Austria. The Vienna State Police Directorate means that no statistical evaluation is being made. The “Fallpillage Illegal”, for example in cosmetic studios, must be “not low”, treasures Johannes Matiansek, deputy chairman for the presentation plastic surgery of the Vienna Medical Association.
Illegal “clinics” flown in Vienna
This year two cases of illegal “clinics” got the headlines: only one in Vienna-Suding was dug up last week. In a former dermatological consecration, various aesthetic-medical interventions such as Botox and Filler treatments were offered without permission. Data from at least 500 customers from local documents are available, a police spokeswoman said.
In February a case of a 35-year-old amate-surgeon became public: the Georgian doctor had seriously injured a patient in illegal beauty surgery in an apartment in Vienna-Landstrasse.
Up to 100,000 interventions per year
According to the city of Vienna, around 30,000 to 100,000 aesthetic interventions are being carried out in Austria. Here you distinguish yourself between treatments and surgical interventions, explains Matiaek, specialist in plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery. The most common treatments are botox and hyaluronic acid (filler), also treatments for skin rejuvenation with laser or self-blood therapy (“vampire lifting”). The most common surgical interventions are liposuction, breast augmentation, eyelid lifts and nose corrections.
As with all medical interventions, complications can also occur in aesthetic treatments, although the complications here are “very low” according to Matisek – on condition that interventions are performed according to the recognized technical standards and rules.
Illegal interventions can be good
Beauty interventions are particularly dangerous if they are performed by unqualified people. These often offer fillers, botox and co cheap. In Austria, only trained specialists are allowed to perform aesthetic treatments. “Treatments in cosmetic studios of non-medical staff are forbidden in Austria, but are often offered and are dangerous because these people cannot have the relevant training and cannot treat complications that occur,” said Matiansek.
