Novak Djokovic, This time with a visa and no country restrictions, he arrived in Australia almost a year after being deported for his refusal to be vaccinated against the coronavirus, as confirmed by Australian Tennis Federation.
The Serbian player will open his 2023 season in adelaide with the main goal of winning his 10th title in australia tomorrow (January 16-29), where he will have a chance to match the record of 22 grand slam from Rafael Nadal. Djokovic received this time a visa from Australian government and he is now in Adelaide.
Australian Open director, Craig Tiley, confirmed in a press conference that Djokovic has arrived in the country. “Novak is welcome in Australia,” Tiley said.
Djokovic missed the last Australian Open, to be played in January 2022, because of his refusal to be vaccinated against the coronavirus. Australia has since lifted restrictions on unvaccinated travellers. The minister of immigration, Andrew Gillesconfirmed last month that Djokovic, who faces a possible three-year ban from entering Australia after being deported, would be granted a visa.
Djokovic has won the Australian Open nine times, including the last three times he has played in the tournament. In the Serb’s absence, Rafa Nadal is the 2022 champion in Djokovic’s absence.
Tiley told reporters that he believes Djokovic will be welcomed in the country. “I have a lot of confidence in the Australian public. We are a very educated sports audience, especially those who go to tennis. They love tennis, seeing greatness, great matches. And I have a lot of confidence that the fans will react the way we hope they will react and have respect for that,” explained the director of the Australian Open.
