Official: Gakpo, Liverpool’s new player

Liverpool have delivered the first big blow in the winter transfer market: they announced Cody Gakpo as a new ‘red’ player on Wednesday. The Anfield club will pay PSV Eindhoven, of which the Dutch international winger is a member until now, 42 million fixed euros and another 15 in variables. Liverpool made the merger official, subject to obtaining a work permit.

Gakpo, at 23 years old one of the sensations of the Qatar 2022 World Cup, passed a medical with Liverpool on Wednesday, the step short of signing until 2028 for the ‘red’ club. Gakpo could make his Liverpool debut next Monday against Brentford in the Premier, in the first game the ‘reds’ will play in 2023. The arrival of the young winger represents a massive quality reinforcement for the team that led by Jürgen Klopp, with long-term injuries to Luis Díaz and Diogo Jota.

In the Eredivisie, this season Gakpo has 9 goals and 12 assists in 14 games. In the Europa League, 3 goals and 2 assists in 5 games. He scored 3 ‘goals’ in the World Cup, one each in the first round of matches, that is, against Senegal, Ecuador and Qatar.
