Embraced by Jürgen Klopp, manager of Liverpool Wednesday for the first time in his new player, Dutch winger Cody Gakpowhose signing for the Anfield club was influenced, as Gakpo himself acknowledged, by Virgil van Dijk, his captain in the national team. Klopp was very pleased with the inclusion of the so far PSV Eindhoven player, as he revealed this Thursday in a press conference on the eve of Thursday’s Premier match against Leicester.
Klopp said of 23-year-old Gakpo, who will wear the 18th shirt for his new team and has scored a goal in each of the Netherlands’ 3 first-round games: “He is a young player with a lot of potential.. If he has scored 40 goals in Spain or elsewhere, we can’t afford to pay him.”

“With these kind of signings, everything is a matter of time”, said Klopp, who was looking for a midfielder rather than a striker during the winter transfer window.
The Liverpool manager added: We know what we want to do and we will see if we can achieve it. It’s a matter of money, of course, but above all it’s a matter of finding the right players and we’re very happy to have Cody.”
The merger of Gakpo can be formalized from January 1, the official start of the winter transfer window. Klopp has virtually ruled out that the winger could make his debut on Monday against Brentford and believes he can do so on January 7 in the FA Cup against Julen Lopetegui’s Wolves.
Gakpo acknowledged Van Dijk’s influence on his decision to sign for Liverpool: “Virgil told me it’s a big club, but it’s also like a real family.. It means a lot to me because I am a family man. I’m so grateful to be here.”
