Jail for some Iranian soccer players after a night of booze and women

The Iranian police Several unidentified top-flight soccer players were temporarily detained in a raid on a New Year’s Eve party where alcohol was served, something forbidden under Islamic law, Iranian media reported.

Mixing between the sexes outside of marriage and drinking alcohol are prohibited by Islamic law in Iran. Social restrictions are among the issues that have sparked widespread unrest in recent months, after the death in custody of a woman accused of breaking the strict dress code.

The semi-official Tasnim news agency said several current and former players of an unidentified major soccer club in Tehran were detained at the party in the east of the capital. “Footballers as well as former players from one of Tehran’s main football clubs were arrested last night (Saturday) at a mixed party in the city of Damavand,” the news agency reported, without giving further details about the identity of this footballer or his club.
