The Madrid City Council agreed on Monday to recognize former Madrid tennis player Manolo Santana after his death as Madrid’s Favorite Sonas well as the awarding of the capital’s Medal of Honor on the occasion of San Isidro to former basketball player Felipe Reyes and the Spanish women’s rugby team.
These concessions were adopted during the extraordinary Governing Board convened this Monday and must be approved by the Plenary Session of the Madrid City Council. The awards ceremony, as is tradition, will be held in conjunction with the next San Isidro festival, on May 15, and whose town the crier is Cantabrian actor Antonio Resines.
Manolo Santana, from Madrid who died at the age of 83, has won four Grand Slam tournaments as a tennis player (two Roland Garros, one United States Open, one Wimbledon), in addition to twenty tournaments, among other achievements.
Felipe Reyes linked his athletic life to two great basketball teams in Madrid, Club Baloncesto Estudiantes (1 Copa del Rey) and Real Madrid (7 ACB leagues, 2 Euroleagues, and Eurocopa, 6 Copas del Rey, 6 Spanish Super Cups), where he retired in 2021.
In addition, he wore the Spanish team shirt on 236 occasions, where he won, among others, a World Cup and three Eurobaskets.
The Medal for the Spanish women’s rugby team is, as indicated, for demonstrating the effort, sacrifice and ambition inherent in the lives of athletes. He recently won the European Championship in the category for the fifth consecutive time.
