The United States Soccer Federation said Tuesday it has launched an investigation into the coach of the United States men’s national team. USA, Gregg Berhalterfor an incident in 1991 in which he hit his wife in the legs.
Berhalter and his wife, Rosalind, released a joint statement acknowledging that the “shameful” incident took place 31 years ago, and Berhalter said he learned about it.
“In the fall of 1991 I met my soulmate. I had just turned 18 and was a freshman in college when I met Rosalind,” said Berhalter, who attended the University of North Carolina.
“One night, while drinking at a local bar, Rosalind and I got into a heated argument that continued outside. It turned physical and I kicked her in the legs. There was no excuse for my actions that night; it was an embarrassing moment and one I regret to this day.”
He said the police never got involved and he voluntarily sought counseling to help him “learn, grow and develop”. The couple were separated for seven months before reconciling. They recently celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary and have four children together.
Berhalter said the investigation came after someone contacted the United States soccer federation during the World Cup last month and said they had information that would “take it down.”
US Soccer thanked the couple for speaking out about the incident. He added that he has launched a technical review of the men’s national team program and will announce who will lead the January men’s national team camp in the coming days.
