Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, second seed, defeated Russian Liudmila Samsonova 7-6 (7) and 7-6 (3) and qualified for the quarterfinals of the Adelaide tennis tournament, preparation for the Australian Open which starts on the 16th.
The fourth favorite, Russian Veronika Kudermetova, Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk and Czech Marketa Vondrousova also qualified in that round.
Kudermetova eliminated Canadian Bianca Andreescu without complications by 6-4 and 6-0.
Kostyuk, 69 of the WTA, needed more to beat 21, Kazakh Elena Rybakina, 6-7 (5), 6-2 and 6-3.
Vondrousova defeated Estonian Kaia Kanepi, 6-0, 6-4 and will be Sabalenka’s rival in the quarterfinals.
The first seed, the Tunisian Ons Jabeur, will play this Thursday in the round of 16 against Romanian Sorana Cirstea.
