Drama in Vietnam – rescue workers: ‘Hope that boy stays alive is limited’

Date:

The rescue operation in Vietnam has been underway since New Year’s Eve to free the boy from his predicament who had fallen down a 35-meter shaft. Soldiers are also on duty at the scene of the accident – but with every hour the hope that the ten-year-old can be saved alive is fading.

The boy, named Thai Ly Hao Nam, was looking for scrap metal at the construction site on Saturday when he fell into the concrete pipe, which was only 25 centimeters in diameter. Because the opening is so narrow, the rescue operation is very difficult. In addition, there is the difficult terrain, which the helpers have a hard time with.

“The hope that he is still alive is limited”
About 100 military personnel and technical experts have now been deployed to the scene of the accident. “The boy has been trapped in the small pillar for four days and is said to have multiple injuries,” Doan Tan Buu, a spokesman for the Dong Thap provincial government, said on Wednesday. “The hope that he is still alive is limited,” he added.

Oxygen is continuously being pumped into the hollow pillar in which the ten-year-old is imprisoned, but contact with the boy has long since been broken. Even a camera strapped to the victim did not reveal any new information about his state of health.

On Wednesday morning, the intention was to pull the concrete pole with the boy out of the ground with a crane, the Vietnamese news platform “VN Express” reports. For this, a larger conduit is placed around the shaft to drain the earth and water between them.

Previously, attempts had been made to soften the ground around the concrete shaft so that the narrow pipe could be pulled out. However, this plan was scrapped because it was feared that the pillar might break apart.
