Aitor Karanka became the new coach of Maccabi Tel Aviv of Israel this Wednesday. The club has confirmed the signing of the 49-year-old Basque coach for the rest of the season and another, so José Mourinho’s former second in command will be on the bench of this team, in principle, until June 2024.
Karanka will make his debut this Saturday, in the match that Maccabi will play against Ashdod at the Bloomfield stadium. The former central defender arrived at the club with a team that included Igor Alexandre Gameiro Dias as assistant, Juan Torrijo as physical trainer and Carlos Luengo Peña as analyst. The inclusion of a goalkeeper coach is pending.
In statements collected on the club’s website, Karanka was “excited and proud to be here. From the first moment I saw the ambition of the team and what was expected of me.”
As a coach, Karanka became the Spanish U-16 coach, Mourinho’s second in Real Madrid, Middlesbrough coach. Nottingham Forest, Birmingham and Grenada.
