The EU is debating measures to coordinate the checks on travelers coming from China this afternoon

Date:

China has claimed to have shared “data and information” about the covid cases registered in the Asian country “responsibly”, and has once again asked the international community not to “politicize the pandemic”.

Health experts from the Twenty-seven will meet in Brussels this Wednesday to discuss the coordination of possible measures entry requirements for the European Union (EU) to check the arrival of travelers from China after the peak of covid-19 infections recorded by the Asian giant in recent weeks following the lifting of most of the restrictions.

The purpose of the meeting, as confirmed by diplomatic sources to Europa Press, is to discuss the Covid-19 situation in China and discuss possible measures the EU could take in a coordinated manner.

The Asian country announced this at the end of December reopens the borders on January 8for the first time since March 2020, as a result of which several countries, mainly in Asia but also the United States and some Europeans, have decided in recent days to require travelers from the Asian country to test negative for covid to travel to their territories.

Meanwhile, Chinese experts, quoted by the local press, describe as “waste of time and resources” prevention measures which the European authority could impose today.

“It is not necessary to require tests of every traveler. Many countries are fully vaccinated to prevent large-scale outbreaks. The most important and would now be effective to analyze the sequences of the virus“, indicates Worldwide times academic Chen Xi of Yale University.

Chinese response

China, for its part, has labeled the measures “unacceptable”, claiming that there are no scientific arguments to justify the restrictions approved by governments such as Spain’s.

In addition, the Chinese government has claimed to have shared “data and information” about covid cases registered in the country “responsibly”, and has once again asked the international community not to “politicize the pandemic”.

The rapid spread of the virus across the country after the withdrawal of the “zero covid” policy has sown doubts about the reliability of official data of infections and deaths, which have recorded only a handful of recent deaths from the disease, despite localities and counties calculating that a significant portion of their populations are infected.
