There will be a single long-course National in 2024

This Tuesday, the Royal Spanish Swimming Federation defined the qualifying criteria for national swimming for the Paris Olympic Games. They are based on three qualifying competitions viz Fukuoka World Cup 2023The Doha World Cup 2024 and a Spanish Open in June 2024.

With the 2024 World Cup in Doha framed for February, a European one is also pending for next year (the continental event is usually held in May in Olympic years; initially the venue will be Kazan, but this may vary ) and the big event, the Games Olympic Games in Paris, scheduled between July 26 and August 11 for all its disciplines, the calendar leaves few openings for the celebration of national events. So, the typical Spanish roadmap will be changed.

The two traditional long-pool national championships (Spring Open and Summer National) will be stopped and combined into a single national event that will take place in June 2024 and be called the Spanish Open.. It will happen five weeks before the Olympics and this would mean the third and final option to achieve the Olympic minimum.

In this way, the three options to achieve the Olympic minimum are wide space. They will be reached in a very long time at this year’s Fukuoka World Cup, five months before the 2024 Doha World Cup Games (it will take place from February 2 to 18) or, when the first list of selections , in this June event attached to the Games which will close the final selection. This championship will follow the schedule of dates that powers like the United States or Australia usually do to establish their Olympic team.
