Chebet and Jepchirchir signed a new Kenyan double at the Boston Marathon

On a sunny day with a temperature of 6 degrees Celsius, the Marathon began from Hopkinton, west of Boston, with nearly 30,000 participantsa third more than last year’s edition, which played limits to the athlete due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Boston is excited to see again the world’s oldest annual Marathon organized on Patriots Day, a holiday in Massachusetts, after the 2020 edition was canceled and the 2021 edition was held extraordinary in the fall.

It’s an event with a long tradition, held annually since a group of Bostonians returned from the 1896 Athens Olympics and decided to organize their own marathon.

Neither the Spanish flu pandemic of 1918 nor the World Wars stopped their contention in the last century and thousands of people gathered on the city streets to watch the athletes compete.

Until fifteen runners they came together at the helm of the race and on the hill of Heartbreak Hill, with Chebet and Tanzanian athlete Gabriel Geay showing signs of being more aggressive.

But Chebet, at kilometer 37, launched a decisive attack. Within minutes, the Kenyan accelerated his walk and opened up space to his pursuers, who had no strength to keep up with his pace.

In an elegant and light step despite the effort, Chebet received the applause of the spectators present in the streets, followed, about 30 meters away, by his compatriot Lawrence Cherono, champion of this Marathon in 2019, and of Cyprus.

Chebet showed no signs of fatigue, but managed to stay calm and cut the tape with 30 seconds left on Cheprono and 36 on Cyprus to complete a new Kenyan domination in Boston.

In the female category, Jepchirchir He seals his victory after defeating Yeshaneh in a test of extreme intensity.

The Ethiopian, who reached the podium in New York and Chicago, formed a trio of leaders along with Jepchirchir and Jepkosgei, with more than a half -minute margin over his pursuers, advancing with steady pace and ease.

But those who showed more energy were Yeshaneh and Jepchirchirwho came together 2 kilometers from the end, when the second gave the first attack.

The Olympic champion in Tokyo and winner of the New York Marathon last year, had a lead of about 15 meters, but Yeshaneh beat him again to lead to a spectacular finish.

Who showed more strength in the final meters was Jepchirchir, who broke the ribbon to become the first athlete capable of winning a gold medals at the Olympic Games and in the New York and Boston marathons.
