Spaniard Jon Rahm started this Thursday with a brilliant nine under the Sentry Tournament of Champions in Kapalúa (Hawaii) and was the best on the first day tied with Americans Colin Morikawa and JJ Spaun.
Rahm overtook Morikawa and Spaun in command of the leaderboard with a birdie at the 18th hole, after a bogey at the 14th hole marred his bright start.
The Spaniard even made an ‘eagle’ on the fifth hole and reacted with three ‘birdies’ in the last four holes after his ‘bogey’.
He finished with a good card, 64 strokes, like Morikawa and Spaun, who signed a clean path with nine ‘birdies’ each.
One impact from the leaders is the South Korean Tom Kim.
A field of six players, including world number two Scottie Scheffler, finished the first round at 7-under-par, two shots off the leaders.
The Sentry Tournament of Champions takes place in Kapalúa until next Sunday.
