Tunisian tennis player Ons Jabeur, world number 2, defeated Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk (69 WTA) this Friday 7-6(5) and 7-5 to advance to the semifinals of the Adelaide tournament where she will face Czech Linda Nosková.
Jabeur, the tournament’s first seed, sealed his ticket to the next stage after defeating the Ukrainian in one hour and 55 minutes. Kostyuk forced a ‘tie-break’ in the first set and came to save a match point in the second. The erratic performance of both on service -with its 3 losses for both- marked the final chapter.
The Tunisian will face the Czech in the semifinals Linda Nosková (102 WTA) who gave a surprise against Belarusian Victoria Azarenka, 26th best racket on the circuit. Nosková gave away the first set and then decided the next two in the tiebreaker and signed a creditable 6-4, 5-7 and 7-6(6).
The other surprise of the day in Australia starred Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu (34) against Russian Veronika Kudermetova by winning the fast track 7-5 and 6-4. Her opponent in the next round is the Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka -5th WTA and second seed of the tournament-.
Sabalenka came through against Czech Marketa Vondrousova and settled the clash in just over an hour and a half of play with a resounding 6-3, 7-5.
