the serbian Novak Djokovic won the Adelaide tournament title against the American Sebastian Kordawho took the championship point against the second set to win 6-7 (8), 7-6 (3) and 6-4.
It was not an easy match for Djokovic, who found a tough opponent in Korda who tired himself early, broke his serve for the first time in the eighth game and had three set points serving in the ninth.
Nole escaped from that tricky scenario to take the result to a tie break. And he even got 7-6 up, avoiding another three set points. However, he failed to execute his comeback and ended up succumbing in the seventh time to his rival at 8-9.
In the second set, one and the other completed their serves with greater or lesser solvency and that gave Korda his first option to lift the trophy remaining at 4-5. There was little he could do there, but he did when at 5-6 he had a match point. Djokovic avoided it and he was in the tie break and was not forgiven, had five set balls and sealed it with the third of them.
It would all be decided in the third and final one, which started like the previous one with the contenders working their serves, including one which Korda won to tie it four-way despite being 0-30 down from in the beginning.
There the American survived but Djokovic didn’t break for the first time to take the tournament 4-5. Despite being down 40-30, the Serbian forced ‘deuce’, gave the continuation an advantage and closed it by taking advantage of his first championship point. All this in just over three hours.
In doing so, Djokovic equaled Rafael Nadal in titles with 92, won 34 consecutive matches on Australian soil and continued to polish off a streak that has seen him score 23 of his last 24 against. All this with the first big year, the Australian Open, just around the corner.
