Santomera honors the historic president of his football team in El Limonar, 15 years after his death
Justice had finally been done with a unique character in Santomeran football for half a century. Yesterday morning, the field of El Limonar was the scene of a tribute to Juan Antonio López Díaz, ‘El Regueras’, who died fifteen years ago but is still a living memory of Santomera’s sport. About three hundred people witnessed what eventually became an entire city’s recognition for one of the most important figures in football: that of Juan ‘El Regueras’, director of Santomera CF for more than thirty years (twenty of them as president) and his engine, hands, soul and heart for almost half a century, as emphasized by the city council in a statement.
At noon the official act took place whereby the Santomera 7-a-side football pitch was named after ‘Juan El Regueras’, the nickname by which he was popularly known in the city of 16,000 inhabitants and located 12 kilometers from Murcia. His widow, Rosario, accompanied by her children and grandchildren, presided over the unveiling of the plaque commemorating the unanimous plenary agreement to award this award, reached in 2019. The event has been postponed until now due to the pandemic. Javier Campillo, councilor for sports and first deputy mayor of Santomera, represented the city council in the tribute to ‘Juan El Regueras’.
Rosario also kicked off the match between the senior teams of Santomera CF and Ciudad de Calasparra (3-3), second and first in Group B of the First Autonomous Region. A great competition to add the finishing touch to a special day in El Limonar.
