The Angel City FC selected the front alyssa thompson in the first overall selection at 2023 NWSL Draft Thursday night in Philly. Thompson is the first high school student taken with the first pick in league history.
The 18-year-old is in his final year at Harvard-Westlake School in Los Angeles and will stay home to play for the Angel City. He had to give up his college eligibility to turn professional.
“This is the hardest decision I’ve had to make in my life,” Thompson told the club’s website. “There was a lot of back and forth about it… But in the end I decided it was the best thing for me.”
Thompson made his debut for the US national team in October, appearing in two games for the senior team so far.
“Alyssa Thompson, for us, is a phenomenon and a generational footballer,” said the club’s general manager, Angela Hucles Mangano. “He’s a player who can have an immediate impact, but he’s still young and can evolve and look like a player that we’re also building for the future.”
