British Jake Dennis, of Avalanche Andretti, won the Mexican E-Prix

Date:

British pilot Jake Dennis of the Avalanche Andretti team was the winner this Saturday at E-Prix held at the Hermanos Rodríguez Autodrome in Mexico City which opened the ninth season of Formula E.

Dennis added 26 points. Second place went to British Pascal Wehrlein of Porsche, 18 points, who started in sixth position. Mahindra Racing’s Brazilian Lucas Di Grassi finished in third place, also with 18 points, winning pole position.

Fourth place went to German André Lotterer of Avalanche Andretti, 12 points; McLaren’s British Jake Hughes finished fifth, 10 points.

Di Grassi was aggressive and defended the privileged position where he started at the beginning of the agreed competition, 36 laps of the 2.6-kilometer circuit.

The start of the race was rough, with three retirements. Dutchman Robin Frijns of the ABT Cupra team retired on the second lap after having braking problems at the chicane where he collided with the Nissan of Frenchman Norman Nato, who also exited the race.

Third to go down in the race was Britain’s Sam Bird on lap six when his Jaguar ran out of power at turn number one. Wehrlein passed British NIO 333 Racing’s Dan Ticktum for fifth position on lap eight. Four laps later, Jack Dennis passed Di Grassi for the lead.

Thanks to his aggressiveness, Wehrlein took fourth place in a spectacular attack that Andretti’s André Lotterer was unable to stop on lap 16.

On lap 18 again turn one was taken by another abandonment. Swiss Maserati Edoardo Mortara lost his rear axle, skidded and landed on the containment wheels.

Jake Dennis got into the rhythm and pulled away to 1.2 seconds on lap 23, which he extended to 2.2 seconds with 10 laps to go.

On lap 27, Wehrlein grabbed third place after a close pass on British McLaren’s Jake Hughes and with seven laps to go the German chased down Di Grassi for second.

Dennis didn’t hesitate to take the victory after 41 laps, to compensate for the five laps there were for the three yellow flags the competition had.

This is the fourth time that the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez in Mexico City has hosted the E-Prix. He did it before in 2016, 2020 and in 2022.

The second and third rounds of Formula E’s ninth season will take place in Diriyah, Saudi Arabia, on January 27 and 28, respectively.
