The Cremonese, who sank to last place in Serie A after failing to win in 18 rounds played, announced on Sunday the appointment of Davide Ballardini as the new coach after Massimiliano Alvini was dismissed on Saturday.
Ballardini, 59, signed a contract until June 30, 2024 with the aim of trying the miracle that would mean achieving permanence as the Cremonese barely added 7 points and 9 behind Sassuolo, marking safety.

Ballardini, who has led his first training session, has been without a team since his fourth spell on the Genoa bench ended in November 2021, having been relegated to Serie B at the end of last season. Before that, he led Cagliari and Palermo, among other teams. At Lazio he achieved his only title as a coach, the Super Cup in 2009, during a short stay at the helm of the Roman team.
He makes his debut on Tuesday in the Coppa against Napoli!
Ballardini’s debut will be on Tuesday no less than against Napoli, the remaining leaders of Serie A, in the round of 16 match of the Italian Cup to be played at the Diego Armando Maradona stadium. His Serie A debut is also away from home, on Monday against Thiago Motta’s Bologna.
Alvini, 52, was sacked on Saturday night after picking up hours before another defeat, the fourth in a row, at home against Monza (2-3). The Cremonese, having finished promotion to Serie A, welcomed him in June to face his return to the ‘calcio’ elite.
