The Canary Islands became a Paralympic sport

The City Council of Puerto del Rosario (Fuerteventura) has signed a collaboration agreement with the Morro Jable Athletics School (EAMJ) for the development of the Paralympic Relay project at the Risco Prieto municipal stadium.

The mayor of the Puerto del Rosario City Council, Juan Jiménez, and the president of the Morro Jable Athletics School Sports Club (EAMJ), Carlos Deana, signed the agreement for this project, which is part of the institutional commitment to promote equality , integration and integration in sports practice that takes place in the municipality.

Through this initiative, EAMJ brings the sports modality of athletics closer to children and youth with disabilities who want to try this sport at the Risco Prieto Municipal Stadium.

The goal of the Paralympic Relay Project is to find and recruit these young people who want to sign up for this sport and turn them into elite Paralympic athletes in the future.

For the development of this activity, which has already started this new season and currently has more than 20 students, the Morro Jable Athletics School Sports Club receives a grant of 12,975 euros.

The club trains athletes in the form of a game, “Playing Athletics”, where the little ones practice athletics-related disciplines from a playful point of view to capture their interest and enjoy the activity.

Twice a week, the club will carry out this activity at the Risco Prieto municipal stadium, and all disabled people who want to sign up can take advantage of it and take part in it.

The Paralympic Relay is a project born in 2021 by the DISA Foundation and the Spanish Paralympic Committee, which aims to increase the number of people with disabilities who regularly engage in physical activity, outside of work and school in the Canary Islands.

The mayor of Puerto del Rosario, Juan Jiménez, underlined the “support for this project from the Institution for its promotion of inclusive sports in our municipality, which allows people with functional diversity to achieve their goals, and build a better future for everyone and everyone. equally, through policies to support physical activity and sports like this one”.

From the EAMJ club, they thanked the City Council for having the club implement this type of initiative that promotes inclusive sport in the municipality.
