France understands the need to modernize and wants to revolutionize the world of arbitration. At a meeting held this morning in Clairefontaine, Eric Borghinipresident of the Federal Referees Commission, appreciates the importance of the change to get closer to the fans: “We are in favor of every referee carrying an open microphone from the beginning to the end of every match, but we need the approval of FIFA”, has commented.
The change is not intended to be radical but progressive: “It is likely that to start this experiment, they will first ask us to try it when the VAR intervenes. We agree. We have nothing to hide. We are not afraid to work with total transparency. I think refereeing can be better understood if we have access to dialogue between the players and the team in charge of directing the match”, he added.
France wants arbitration to be like rugby in the medium term, where everyone is heard. Make it more humane, especially when there are mistakes. Another new thing has to do with communication: “The referees will speak immediately after the matches. We have to prepare them, give them training and they know how to explain themselves when faced with problems, but they have to explain themselves to the media”, he concluded. Eric Borghini.
