Gaviria: “I am a more mature rider and I can have a good season with the Movistar team”

Date:

The Colombian Fernando Gaviria (La Ceja, 28 years old), star signing of Movistar by 2023, he hopes to return to the path of success in Return to San Juan which starts this Sunday and ends on the 29th.

After two seasons with just three wins, the man from Antioquia is excited about the new blue jersey of the Spanish squad.

“I’m happy to welcome the team, I look forward to starting this race, which is important because victories count. I know the race and I know I have options, but there are tough rivals who also see the end of the stages” he commented.

Gaviria, who has 5 stages in the Giro and 2 in the Tour to his credit, wants to once again communicate with the best in mass arrivals. In San Juan, faces can be seen as specialists like the Dutch Fabio Jakobsen or the irish st bennett, among others. Now he comes with enthusiasm to a team that has no tradition of sprinters.

“This could be a good season. The team wants to change to have a sprinter. There are riders who have never done the job for the mass arrivals specialists, but others are, like Albert Torres, a world-class pistard. This is a runner I can get more out of than, say, enric mas“, he explained.

Debutant at the Vuelta a San Juan in 2017, Fernando Gaviria scored 8 wins, making him a record holder. Six years later, the man from Antioquia looks like a more mature cyclist with new expectations in the Movistar blue jersey. In the last season he got only 2 victories, both in tour oman.

“Now I consider myself a slightly more mature runner. I returned to track training this year and I think I can do it better than in other previous seasons, where there was difficulties. I hope I can do well,” he said.

Regarding the moment of Colombian cycling, Gaviria considers that “it is at the top and continues to excite”. “Cycling is changing and we’re not robots changing batteries and that’s it,” he stressed.

“Cycling in Colombia is at the level of popularity of soccer, and it’s a shame that you can’t do that Tour of Colombia. What happened was the runners like Pogacar or Vingegaard and nothing more can be done. We continue to have a good level in Colombia,” he concluded.
