The leader of Benfica beat Santa Clara this Saturday at home (0-3) with a goal by Gonçalo Guedes on his return to the ‘eagles’ after being on loan last Friday at Wolverhampton. Meanwhile, Porto also delivered in their challenging match against Guimarães (0-1) and remains third in the Primeira Liga.
After the 17th round of the Portuguese championship, Benfica leads the table with 44 points, four ahead of Braga and five ahead of Porto.
The leader opened the scoring in the 9th minute, when Argentine Enzo Fernández put in a cross and Aursnes put it into the back of the net.
Gonçalo Ramos extended the lead seven minutes later, this time with an assist from Alejandro Grimaldo. The leading scorer in the Primeira Liga already has 12 goals.
Guedes enters and sentences
Already in the final stages of the match, Guedes completed his return to Benfica, the team where he started his career, scoring the third goal with a shot at the entrance of the area from a pass from Enzo Fernández. The former Valencian jumped onto the field in the 63rd minute and sealed the match in the 80′.
With the loss, Santa Clara is third from bottom, as it heads into a playoff to avoid relegation.
Porto wins in Guimaraes
For their part, Porto defeated Vitória de Guimarães at the bottom, also at home (0-1), thus keeping their pulse on winning the league title.
João Mário scored a penalty goal in the first half that left Guimarães in seventh place.
Second-placed Braga beat Paços de Ferreira at home (1-2) with goals from Vitinha and Simon Banza.
Scotsman Holsgrove scored the goal for Paços de Ferreira, who remain bottom with just six points.
