Ukraine will consider boycotting the Paris 2024 Games if the International Olympic Committee admits the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes, Ukrainian Youth and Sports Minister Vadym Guttsait warned today.
“The Executive Committee of the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine has decided to start consultations with national sports federations on a possible boycott of the Paris Olympics in 2024 if Russian and Belarusian athletes are allowed to participate,” he wrote in his account. From Facebook.
Guttsait said that the Ukrainians will do “everything possible to prevent Russian and Belarusian athletes from participating in international competitions, even under a neutral flag or under any conditions.”
“There can be no agreements with representatives of terrorist countries! As long as there is a war in our country, we will continue the policy of sanctions against Russian and Belarusian athletes! “He argues.
The Ukrainian Sports Minister noted that the National Olympic Committee has again sent letters to all National Olympic Committees and sports federations with this request.
“I hope that now all the federations, athletes and the whole civilized world will pay attention to this, and we will not have to take drastic measures,” he said.
The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyhe referred to this in a telephone conversation with his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron, in which he assured that “Russian athletes should not have a space” at the Paris Olympics.
This Wednesday, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) recommended the readmission of Russian and Belarusian athletes to international competitions, under a neutral flag and if they meet a series of conditions, including “inactive supporting the war in Ukraine.”
The IOC Executive considers that “no athlete can be deprived of competing because of their passport.”
The proposal comes exactly a year and a half after the opening of the Paris Olympic Games, where the qualifying tournaments are already underway. Now athletes from two sanctioned countries can access them.
In this decision, the IOC said it considered a letter from the UN rapporteur against racism and discrimination, in which it expressed its concern about the fact that the ban on the participation of athletes, referees and other actors in sports based on your nationality can be discrimination.
