In recent weeks, various Islamophobic actions in Western countries have sparked outrage in Turkey. In response, the Danish ambassador was summoned to the foreign ministry on Friday because “an attack on the Koran” had been authorized in front of the Turkish embassy in Copenhagen.
After announcing in the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet that he intended to burn copies of the Quran every Friday from now on until Sweden joined NATO, far-right politician and provocateur Rasmus Paludan had taken action.
Quran burnt in front of a mosque in Copenhagen
He set fire to a Koran in front of a mosque in northwestern Copenhagen, the Danish news agency Ritzau reported. Spectators tried to disturb him during a speech with loud Arabic music. About 50 police officers were on the scene.
Paludan is originally from Denmark and also holds Swedish citizenship. Unlike in Sweden, according to Aftonbladet, he does not need a permit for such rallies in Denmark, he only needs to report them to the authorities 24 hours in advance. In recent weeks, various actions in Western countries have sparked outrage in Turkey.
For example, activists in Stockholm hung a doll resembling Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan from his feet, Paludan burned the Koran in Stockholm and in the Netherlands the Holy Book of Islam was publicly torn up.
The Turkish government used the action in Sweden in particular as an opportunity to reaffirm its doubts about NATO’s northern expansion with the country and Finland, despite all the distancing of the government in Stockholm. Turkey and Hungary are currently the only members that have not yet agreed to the enlargement.
