Dangerous spiciness – Ministry of Health warns against a courage test with chips

Date:

A test of courage involving the ‘world’s sharpest chip’ has alarmed health authorities around the world. Eating tortilla chips always ends up in the hospital. Sales have already been stopped in the US and Germany. Now the Austrian Ministry of Health is also warning about the dangerous snack.

The Health and Food Safety Agency (AGES) issued a product warning on Wednesday. “As reported through the European Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF), extremely high levels of capsaicin were sometimes measured in the product. Capsaicin is a component of chilies and other peppers and is responsible for their hot, burning taste. If such spicy chips are eaten, mucous membrane irritations, nausea, vomiting and circulatory problems may occur,” the warning reads.

In fact, there have been numerous reports of medical emergencies in Germany and the US following the courage test involving eating the chip in front of the camera. The dangerous fun is especially popular among young people, and videos are spreading on social media.

Manufacturer is now changing the recipe
Sales of the product have already been stopped in Germany and the US, where a teenager even died after eating chips. The manufacturer from the Czech Republic responsible for Europe emphasized to the German broadcaster SWR on Monday that the recipe complies with all EU regulations. There are also sufficient warnings on the packaging. Still, they are working on a new recipe with less capsaicin.

AGES warns “urgently” against consumption
According to AGES, the affected chip is still available in Austria. “Since it cannot be ruled out that the corresponding products are still available in Austrian households, we urgently warn against consumption,” it is emphasized.
