the eritrean cyclist Biniam Girmay (Intermarché-Circus-Wanty) is “very proud” of his performance after winning this Wednesday in Altea (Alicante) in first stage of the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana Gran Premi Banc Sabadell and he admitted that he started sprinting now because I couldn’t see clearly where the finish line was.
“I am very happy for my teammates. They were super strong again all day. I am also very proud of my sprint. Because of the shadows, I did not see clearly the distance left to the finish line, so I started the sprint very far, maybe three hundred meters from the end”, the Eritrean cyclist admitted in a statement published by his team.
Girmay also commented at the end of the stage that he had been “waiting for more than a month” for his first victory of the season. “I am in good shape and last week in Mallorca I came close to winning several times. To achieve this victory in Altea was amazing and I am very happy”, he stated.
“My plan here in the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana is to win at least one stage. We have achieved it and now look for another victory and help Rui Costa fight for the general classification of the race”, added Girmay, who became the first African to win a stage of the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana and he the first leader of the general classification.
