Organizers of the Paris Olympic Games on Friday unveiled a sample of the five Olympic rings mounted on the Eiffel Tower, with 50 days to go before the start of the Summer Games in the French capital.
The hoop structure, made from recycled French steel, will be displayed on the south side of the iconic monument with 135 years of history in the heart of Paris, overlooking the River Seine.
There will be no shortage of emblematic places at the Paris Olympic Games. The tower, dubbed La Dame de Fer (The Iron Lady), will feature in the Paris Games from July 26 to August 11 and the Paralympic Games.
Men’s and women’s volleyball will compete at the foot of the 330-meter tall monument. They will be witnessed by almost 13,000 fans at the temporary site of the Eiffel Tower, located on the nearby Champ de Mars, where Parisians and tourists enjoy picnicking on the lawn or watching fireworks on July 14.
The Paris Olympic and Paralympic medals are decorated with hexagonal pieces of steel taken from the tower. The hugely popular monument in central Paris has seen visitor numbers rise in the build-up to this summer’s Games.
