Mazarrón will host the Mariano Rojas Memorial Trophy flying target for the second consecutive year
The organization of the Vuelta a la Región traveled this Thursday to Mazarrón, a place that will be the flying target of the Mariano Rojas Memorial Trophy for the second consecutive year. Paco Guzmán, general manager of the round, also announced the details of the participation in this new edition. A total of 140 runners from 26 nationalities will be at the start.
There will be five national road champions in the peloton: Pascal Eenkhoorn (Lotto), champion of the Netherlands; Nils Politt (Bora), German Champion; Orluis Aular (Caja Rural), champion of Venezuela; Vinicius Rangel (Movistar), champion of Brazil, and Lucas Eriksson (Tudor), champion of Sweden. Five other time trial champions will also be present: Raúl García Pierna (Spain), Bruno Armirail (France), Jay Vine (Australia), Erik Fetter (Hungary) and Omer Goldstein (Israel).
The event at Mazarrón City Hall was attended by Gaspar Miras, the city’s mayor; Francisco García, Councilor for Sports, and Paco Guzmán, General Manager of the Vuelta. “We invite the people to welcome the runners and teams, who come from our country and from all corners of the world, with open arms. We also want to thank the organization for another edition with us.”
The race will reach the city of Mazarrón on the 11th, at 4:10 p.m., passing through the city along Avenida Constitución, where the flying finish line of the Mariano Rojas Memorial will be. Paco Guzmán referred to the participation this edition will have. 20 teams will start in San Javier. Among them there are 9 ‘World Teams’, the highest category of cycling: the defending champions, UAE Team Emirates, Astana Qazaqstan Team, Cofidis, Movistar Team, Bora – Hansgrohe, Groupama-FDJ, Intermarché-Circus-Wanty, Ineos Grenadires and Arkéa samsic . Two more than in the previous edition.
It will be Ineos’ first participation in the Cycling Tour of the Region of Murcia. The team that has dominated the Tour de France for the last ten years, with 7 overall victories, comes to the region under the leadership of Pavel Sivakov. Another set to debut is France’s Groupama-FDJ, which will debut with a young team with a lot of projection. For its part, UAE Emirates, last year’s big protagonist of the Vuelta, will be ready to repeat victory. Their ranks include Matteo Trentin, Marc Hirschi, Tin Wllens and Jay Vine, winner of the Tour Down Under General, the first race of the 2023 World Tour, held in Australia and one of the favorites to win in Cartagena.
