The First Federation is in the air. It is not yet two full seasons and Real Murcia is making its debut in it, but the alarm has sounded. The third step of Spanish football, the successor to Second B, could disappear if the Federation decides to restructure non-professional football again after the new category, which was born in the 2021-22 season, does not meet the expectations that were awakened in the beginning.
In a short period of time, the First Federation is the protagonist of several news items that show a lack of consistency. The last one took place last week. Up to 18 clubs in the category (Amorebieta, Balompédica Linense, Eldense, Unionistas, UE Cornellà, San Fernando, Real Unión, Nàstic, Intercity, La Nucía, Linares, SD Logroñés, Rayo Majadahonda, AD Mérida, Numancia, Osasuna Promises, UD San Sebastián de los Reyes and Talavera) signed a statement disagreeing with the management models proposed by the RFEF for a vote.
In a category that pretended to be professional and is proving to be in short supply, economic control and commercialization of television rights are central themes at the heart of the discussion. At the moment, Real Murcia, also plunged into a market end that has lasted longer than usual due to the signing of Dani Romera, has not manifested itself.
The new third category came at a difficult time and through a delicate process: in times of pandemic and with a Second B of 102 clubs with groups and sub-groups. The teams were able to promote to second place as always, but they also risked being relegated to two categories in one season. In fact, Real Murcia dropped one. The promise was a new Second B that would bring the contestants closer to professionalism.
But while the competition was going on, problems arose in marketing the television rights or finding a sponsor. Last season, the debut season, saw ‘Footters’ stop broadcasting the league due to economic reasons or Extremadura leaving it in the middle of the season.
