Gabriel Paulista, suspended for two games

Competition imposes lowest possible sanction on Valencia’s Brazilian centre-back after the kick to Vinicius that cost him the red card at the Bernabéu and which he regrets

Gabriel Paulista can be satisfied with the two-match suspension imposed on him this Friday by the Spanish Football Federation’s Competition Commission for the kick he gave Real Madrid player Vinicius that cost the Brazilian defender of Valencia the exclusion at the Santiago Bernabéu on Thursday .

The sports court of first instance imposed the minimum penalty of the disciplinary code on the Valencia defender for using himself in a “violent manner, without the possibility of challenging for the ball” against Vinicius. In addition, Paulista confronted several Real Madrid footballers after seeing the red card, in particular his compatriot Militao, already on his way to the dressing room.

The Castilian-La Mancha referee Alberola Rojas did not hesitate to point out the Valencia defender with a direct red card, who is still without a win in 2023 and is dangerously close to the relegation zone. The 72nd minute of the game was underway, with Real Madrid already leading 2-0, when Vinicius faced Paulista and hit him. In the minutes, Arberola indicates that Paulista was sent off for “kicking an opponent, without the possibility of challenging the ball, with excessive force.” The arbitrator does not add any information about subsequent discussions.

The sanction considered for this type of act ranges from two to four parties, according to Article 121 of the above-mentioned Disciplinary Law, for which reason the minimum degree has been applied to Paulista. Paulista will miss Sunday’s visit to Girona and the match against Athletic on Saturday 11 February at Mestalla.

This is Gabriel’s second direct red card ban since arriving in Valencia in 2017. This season he lost his starting position in the defensive axis, having played 919 minutes between the 21 league, cup and supercup matches of Spain the team has played.

The footballer has regrets on his Instagram account, where he confessed that he lost his temper but always made it clear that he did not want to hurt Vinicius at any point. “I accept the criticism and the red card, I’m not proud. I am a blunt player, but noble. I respect Vinicius and I never meant to hurt him. We are suffering a lot at this great club, experiencing a very difficult situation and feelings are running high. Sometimes it is difficult to control the nerves. I couldn’t control them and I sincerely apologize. I’m sorry fan. We will fight to the end to reverse this situation. Let no one doubt us,” Paulista posted on this social network.
