The League Cup final, to be played between Manchester United and Newcastle on February 26, will have fans on their feet for the first time in nearly 35 years.
Each club will receive around 900 Wembley goalposts for their fans to stand on, a first for regulations introduced after the Hillsborough disaster in April 1989.
The possibility to attend matches standing, and not sitting in an armchair, was banned after the death of 97 Liverpool fans at the Hillsborough stadium in Sheffield, in the semi-final of the FA Cup between Nottingham Forest and the ‘reds” .
The Premier League and the EFL (English Football League), organizer of the League Cup, have allowed the introduction of zones where fans can stand from this season after testing the proposal last season in some stadiums .
