the burkinabe Hughes Fabrice Zango became the great hero of the meeting of Val-de-Reuil (France), after winning the triple jump final this Saturday with a better attempt at 17.48 meters, the best world mark of the year.
Zango, who holds the world record at 18.07 meters, made his intentions clear from his first jump, where he landed an amazing 17.27 meters.
Twenty-eight centimeters more than the best course record so far, 16.99, signed by Italian Emmanuel Ihejeme on January 28 in Fayetteville (United States).
But the best is yet to come, because Zango, silver medalist at the outdoor World Championships held last year in Eugene (United States), flew up to 17.48 meters in his third attempt.
An unattainable mark for Cuban Lázaro Martínez, current indoor world champion, who had to settle for second place with 17.16 meters, thirty-two centimeters less than the Burkinabe’s triple jumper.
Hugues Fabrice Zango’s was not the only best world record of the year established this Saturday at the Jesse Owens room in Val-de-Reuil, where French Noelie Yarigo rose to first place in the world rankings after winning the final of the 800 meters with a time of 1:59.29 minutes.
Yarigo took 1.15 seconds off the current best course record, the 2.00.44 minutes set by Slovenian Anita Horvat last week in the German city of Karlsruhe.
Who could not achieve the best course record, despite trying, was the Ukrainian jumper Yaroslava Mahuchikh, who won the final height with a record of 1.95 meters.
Mahuchikh, the current indoor world champion, failed in his three attempts to clear 2.01 meters, which would have allowed him to surpass the year’s best world mark of 2.00 meters that he himself has held since January 14. EFE
