Rui Costa: “I have played the last card and it has paid off”

Date:

the portuguese runner Rui Costa (Interarché), winner of the general classification and of the fifth and final stage of Volta a la Comunidad Valenciana-GP Banc Sabadellpointed out on purpose, after his surprising victory, that he had played all on one card in his last attack and that fortunately he got the reward.

The 36-year-old veteran cyclist commented on the stage’s progress: “On the last climb it was a bit difficult for me to keep up with the best but I found my rhythm and in the end I was with them on the descent. It was the last part, sometimes I thought they were going to catch me but I played my last attacking card and it paid off. When I arrived I thought I would fight for the general classification but I didn’t think I would win. Winning here at the Volta a Valencia is incredible.”

Rui Costa, 2013 World Road Champion, congratulated himself on how well the season has started, both for his new team, Intermarché, and personally.

“I am very happy, also with my new team I have found a lot of motivation from the beginning. Things have started very well in Mallorca with a win and here too I don’t expect to do well overall. But the conditions are very good,” he concluded.
